Day 5 ( A Villanelle) #napowrimo

Text from Vasko Popa’s poem ‘Signs’
‘What does the drop of blood want in the corner of heaven?
in that one-eyed corner of heaven’

Hiccup

What does the drop of blood want in the corner of heaven?
The fat droplet with all the skin fettered, alone
in that one-eyed corner of heaven

Resting like a single sound in the knuckle span,
the one that oozes out like a sharp hiccup into bone
What does the drop of blood want in the corner of heaven?

Heaven, white, white, white, an endless white sheen
The shut eye in sleep, stomping on itself, stomping alone
in that one-eyed corner of heaven

What does it want? What is in heaven?
What does it ache for? Why does it wander like a red bee’s thorn?
What does the drop of blood want in the corner of heaven?

Buzzing, buzzing, buzzing like a stretched bean
The singular sound penetrating all things, all grown
in that one-eyed corner of heaven

It only splits, further and further in heaven
The most useless song, a dirge for all, a suave stone
What does the drop of blood want in the corner of heaven?
In that one-eyed corner of heaven
